How Does Hand Therapy Work?

Hand therapy strategies differ per patient, but you’ll typically learn joint mobilization exercises and techniques that will help strengthen your hands and improve flexibility. Your hand therapist may start treatment by stretching your fingers and wrists, using small motions to begin strengthening the tissues around your bones.

Hand therapists can also work with you to help with custom splint fabrication, equipment adaptation and work on energy conservation as well as activity prescription.

Benefits of Hand Therapy

While the primary benefit of hand therapy is restoring function and the ability to complete everyday tasks, it also offers other advantages:

  • Improved psychological well-being because patients can feel a sense of normalcy.
  • Increased motivation to continue therapy sessions as patients regain function.
  • Stronger therapist and patient partnership as the patient continues working toward their recovery and goals.

Many of our hand therapists are registered occupational or physical therapists who continue their education to become proficient in treating upper extremity injuries and conditions. Some also received advanced training and education to become certified hand therapists, which requires meeting mandated criteria to keep the specialized credential.

Conditions and Injuries Hand Therapy Treats

Hand therapy treats many conditions and injuries, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tennis elbow
  • Hand pain
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Trigger finger
  • Sprains and strains
